Becky Lynch won the WWE Women’s World Championship in an epic battle royal on WWE Raw. Lynch became just the fourth person to win a WWE World Championship in a battle royal match.

The WWE Women’s World Championship was vacated, last week. Now former-champion, Rhea Ripley, suffered an injury that will take her out of action for a couple of months.

Lynch cut a promo while making her way from backstage to Gorilla Position at the Schottenstein Center, Ohio. She passed many of the other competitors in the battle royal. Lynch even stopped to hand some advice to Maxxine Dupri.

Lynch made her entrance while Michael Cole praised her book – The Man: Not Your Average Average Girl – which was enjoying its third consecutive week on the New York Times Best Sellers list.

Fourth Person To Win A World Championship In A Battle Royal

Battle royal matches rarely crown a new champion. Traditionally, they are used to provide a lot of wrestlers the opportunity to appear on a show, as pre-show hype, or to find a number-one contender.

This battle royal felt different. Multiple ongoing feuds were moved forward which meant eliminations felt like they mattered. The match also ran more than 20 minutes and felt closer to a mini-Royal Rumble than a traditional throwaway battle royal.

Becky Lynch became just the fourth person to win a championship in a WWE battle royal this century, and the first in 17 years.

Gail Kim won the Women’s World Championship in her debut in a battle royal on WWE Raw in 2003.  Kurt Angle won a SmackDown battle royal for the World Heavyweight Championship in 2006. Finally, The Great Khali won the same championship in 2007 in a battle royal.

How The Man Came Around

Lynch had not been seen on WWE TV since she lost to Rhea Ripley at WrestleMania 40 in a match for the title she now holds. Post-WrestleMania, Lynch went on a book tour which created rumors she might take a break from WWE along with her husband Seth Rollins.

But Lynch made multiple appearances on the WWE Live tour of the UK.

She eliminated Piper Niven in the battle royal. An enraged Niven pulled Lynch under the bottom rope and squashed her between the steel ring steps.

Nia Jax was also under the bottom rope by Niven. Jax chokeslammed Niven onto Lynch on the announce table. When the table didn’t break, Jax hit a Samoan drop on Niven onto Lynch. The table still didn’t break. Finally, Jax powerbombed Lynch through the table, seemingly ending her chance at winning the title.

But Lynch clawed her way back into the ring as the match came down to Jax and Liv Morgan. Lynch eliminated Jax following some double-team moves with Morgan.

Finally, Lynch hit a Manhandle Slam on Morgan for the win.

What Next?

Lynch begins her seventh reign as a women’s champion in WWE. She closed WWE Raw celebrating in the crowd. It caps a positive story for Lynch who had battled with Morgan and Jax throughout 2024. Both had tried to pull focus from Lynch’s WrestleMania 40 match. Perhaps they succeeded as she lost to Ripley.

But when it mattered, Lynch finally got the job done and got one over both Morgan and Jax. It was a neatly wrapped story, tied with a perfect bow.

Next week, Becky Lynch will get a better idea of her challengers for the WWE Women’s World Championship.

The WWE is freshening its rosters with a Draft. Morgan and Jax will want a shot at Lynch’s title but so could the stars moving over from SmackDown or NXT

Ripley, Lynch, Jax and Morgan have excelled in establishing the main event division on the WWE Raw roster this year.

But now, it is time for a change.
