Falcons LB Andersen to Have Surgery, Coach Smith Updates Return

Even with missing Week 2's win over the Green Bay Packers due to a concussion, Andersen ranked third on Atlanta's defense in tackles with 18 while adding half a sack and one tackle for loss.

Smith dubbed Andersen, a second-round pick in 2022, as a "unique player," citing his size (6-4, 235 pounds), speed (4.42 40-yard dash) and instincts while singling out his ability to impact games in coverage and as a pass rusher.

As such, Andersen's a big loss - but the Falcons remain confident about what the future holds.

“It’s unfortunate," Smith said. "Obviously, he was playing really good football for us. Disappointed, but he’s got a bright future ahead of him.”

With Andersen out, the Falcons' linebackers room consists of starter Kaden Elliss, ascending second-year standout Nate Landman, special teams ace Tae Davis, and newly elevated practice squad piece Andre Smith.

Landman, an undrafted free agent in 2022, will slide into Andersen's starting spot, and the Falcons are more than comfortable with that.

When Andersen missed Atlanta's game against Green Bay, Landman shined in his first career start, making four tackles, one coming for loss.

During the ensuing week, both defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen and assistant head coach/defense Jerry Gray mentioned Landman impressed so much that he forced them to consider three-linebacker packages to get him on the field moving forward.

Now, that package won't be needed - but Smith still likes the group holding down the middle of Atlanta's defense, in large part because of Landman. 

“Felt great about the depth on the entire team," Smith said. "Nate’s a guy we have a lot of confidence in. If we didn’t have confidence in somebody, we wouldn’t put them out there. I have a ton of confidence in Nate Landman. Played pretty well two weeks ago. He’ll play well.

"I’ve got a lot of confidence if we had to play Tae (Davis) or Andre (Smith). That’s why they’re on the roster.”

The Falcons will take their new-look linebackers room across the pond this week, as they're poised for a Week 4 contest with the Jacksonville Jaguars in London.

Kickoff between Atlanta and Jacksonville is set for 9:30 a.m. EST.
