Blue Jays Nation’s Pre-Season Prospect Countdown – No. 30: Brennan Orf

The 2023 draft class features some intriguing position players, including today’s prospect!

This is Blue Jays Nation’s annual pre-season list, in which I’ll take a look at the top 50 prospects in the organization. We’ll look at the player’s stats, my observations, and other publications’ scouting reports if available.

Let’s take a look at Brennan Orf

Getting to know Brennan Orf…

Position: Right field/First base

Bats: Left

Born: September 6, 2001

Acquired: 13th-round, 2023 draft (Blue Jays)

2023 Team: Single-A Dunedin

Previous Ranking: 45

Orf spent three seasons at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, where he slashed .324/.471/.674 with 33 home runs in 497 plate appearances. Moreover, the outfielder had an 18.9 BB% and a 17.3 K%. In his final season, Orf slashed .351/.506/.769 with 19 home runs in 253 plate appearances, along with 54 walks and 40 strikeouts.

This prompted the Blue Jays to select the 22-year-old with the 394th overall pick. Orf made his professional debut with the Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays, where he had a slash line of .224/.439/.308 with no homers in 148 plate appearances. As was the case in his collegiate career, Orf had a similar BB% (24.3%) as his K% (26.4%), and he hit seven doubles and a triple.

Orf has a good approach at the plate given the fact he’s walked anywhere he has played. On top of that, the 6’4”, 230 lbs outfielder has some impressive exit velocities, maxing out at 107 mph in college and 104.9 mph with the Dunedin Blue Jays. Moreover, he had an average exit velocity of 84.6 mph while putting 60 balls in play.

The 22-year-old played first base the majority of the time with Dunedin, playing 25 games or 208 innings at first. Orf also played some right field, playing 65.1 innings or eight games.

Orf has yet to rank on any other list, but the bat is one to monitor as he has a ton of power and a great approach at the plate. The hit tool isn’t awful either, but we’ll see if he can hit for average as a professional. Defensively, it’s likely that his main home will be first base, but he could play right field in a pinch.
